I mean, in case you're doing a physical to VE migration, you're to remember turning some things off and doing other tuning («rat-file works»). And it's easy to miss something. At the other hand, the distro-devs know their rc-system perfectly (at least some of them should) and direct support of distro run inside VE would be really great. But I'm afraid there're no such distros, am I wrong?

The way I do it is mostly automated. I have a script that I run on the HN that cleans up a mess of usual stuff in the "reformed" VE that was running on the physical-but-now-VE server, like getty, disabling services, updating the apt/sources.list (I'm a Debian guy), and installing and configuring some extra stuff (like SNMPd). I've yet to be comfortable with the automatic copy between physical to VE, so that's still done by hand... at least right now. Because I'm lazy (and manual labor can be full of error), I automate as much as I possibly can.

Oh, and when I can, I try to just start with a fresh VE instead of porting an existing one. I always create new servers as VEs because I'm a big believer in the container system. The servers I have to reform are always servers that were previously not maintained by me. I usually have a lot of cruft to clean up, even after my automation.

Yeah, it's relatively simple when dealing with one specific distro. But things can go wrong even in this case, usually after system update. If udevd, for e. g., had chances to become alive again, you need to access HN to fix it.
