I am happy to report we have some success with our Wiki at wiki.openvz.org. So far we are at almost 50 articles, and the number keeps growing daily.
The most exciting fact that there are a few articles written by OpenVZ community, for example, this Ubuntu template article, or a short troubleshooting note on Cpanel quotas.
You can contribute as well, too. After logging in, you can edit any article, or start a new one.
Wiki features
Wiki markup is just great. It is easy to learn and easy to type, much easier than HTML. Consider this example of bulleted list in HTML and wiki (they both generate the same presentation in your browser):
| HTML markup | Wiki markup |
|---|---|
<ul> <li>one</li> <li>two</li> </ul> |
* one * two |
The one feature I especially like is categories. You can assign an article to one or several categories (by just adding [[Category: Name]] to the article), and it will appear in the appropriate category pages (for example, see Category:Networking).
Another feature is talk pages. Each article has a corresponding talk page, where you can discuss the article. It is especially useful if people have some concerns about the article contents and instead of just changing it they first discuss the future changes on the talk page.
Special pages is a nice tool, too. They are in fact some php scripts which usually query the underlying database. That way, you can have some statistics, or find something you need. For example, Special:Longpages will give you a list of pages sorted by their length. Some of the special pages (like Special:Recentchanges comes with RSS/Atom feeds, so you can use your RSS reader to track the recent changes (which I do).
CSS stylesheets for printing are of great help if you want to print some page from a wiki. Try it now by printing any page from OpenVZ wiki — I bet you like the result. You’ll get what you want — no top, left or bottom frame, just a text of the article, with links destination printed in brackets for all links.
To conclude — wiki is a fantastic tool for collaborative development of a project’s knowledge base.
